is the most developed district in Nepal’s mountainous Karnali
Zone. This is the home of much of Nepal’s culture and language. The
dialect is Khaas Kura, forerunner to the modern Nepali language. Shamanism
co-exists with Hinduism. The influence of spirit mediums is widespread.
The country is wild and settlements are clustered, with notched tree-trunk
ladders leading to the top rooms of flat-roofed houses. The landscape is
one of forested hills with views of Himalayan peaks. The INF Jumla Programme runs a TB and leprosy referral clinic, and provides support to health services throughout the district. |
