INF UK and the United Mission to Nepal [UMN] will be hosting a joint UK-based conference from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 October 2010.

INF helps Nar Bahadur

Nar Bahadur had part of his right leg amputated after it was crushed by a boulder as he was clearing debris from a landslide in Mustang.

Money from an INF 'Poor Fund' helped to pay for his surgery at the Western Regional Hospital in Pokhara, he needed nine units of blood.

New magazine out now

The latest edition of INF's thrice-yearly 20-page colour magazine 'Today in Nepal' is out now.

The lead article of the latest edition focuses on the work of INF gynæcologist Dr Shirley Heywood.

Other articles include: a story about the work of INF's Dr Irmgard Spittler and her new counselling training centre; a story about the work of Bishnu Giri, the new Manager of INF's 'Partnership For Rehabilitation'; and a story about INF's new Assistant Programmes Director, Prem Subedi.

2009 Review out now

INF has published its 2008-9 Annual Review. The highly illustrated 56-page Review gives full details of INF's health and development work in Nepal, principally in the Banke, Dang, Jumla, Kaski, Mugu and Surkhet Districts.

In their introduction to the Review, INF Nepal Director Deependra Gautam and INF Worldwide Acting Director Seeta Gurung write that:

INF Australia will be represented at the big 'Surrender' mission conference at the Belgrave Heights Convention Centre in Belgrave Heights in Victoria from Friday 5 March to Monday 8 March 2010.

The two INF representatives who are due to be in attendance at the Surrender conference are INF Australia's new Development Director Phil Morris and INF Australia's Matt Clark.

A year ago Kapila, 17, was in a car accident and sustained major burns. She was referred to hospital in Kathmandu where she had her right arm amputated, and both legs below the knee.

Hairdresser backs catalogue

INF supporter Ann Page got a surprise after telling her hairdresser about the new INF gift catalogue. He told her not to pay for her re-perm but to buy him gifts from the catalogue for the same price instead!

Elton Clough, the proprietor of 'Betty Tigers' hair salon in Sheffield in the UK, later received gift cards for a leprosy self-care kit and stool test from Ann - the kit and test will now benefit poor INF clients in Nepal.

World Leprosy Day

Yesterday was the 57th annual World Leprosy Day. Together with the Nepali government and other non-government organisations involved in leprosy work, INF helped to organise a procession in the capital Kathmandu. Yesterday morning at 9.30 INF representatives were among hundreds of people who walked from Basantapur Square to the City Hall, wearing promotional orange baseball caps and carrying banners and placards to raise awareness of the issue of leprosy.

Ram Kumar Nav, 50, is from Nepal's Kapilvastu District. It took 12 days to get him to INF's Green Pastures Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre in Pokhara, partly because he had to be carried, and partly because he was so ill that he could only bear so much travelling each day.

Three years ago he was diagnosed with leprosy but continued to earn money in his barber's shop, working with his two sons. However, he developed an ulcer in his insensitive foot which became badly infected.

Leprosy 'eliminated'

Nepal's Ministry of Health yesterday announced that leprosy has been 'eliminated' in the country.

The announcement comes as the result of the latest leprosy data for Nepal, published in December, which showed that the incidence of leprosy had dropped to 0.89 registered cases per 10,000 people.

Catalogue helps Jakron

Funds raised through the INF gift catalogue have helped Jakron Khan to recover from tuberculosis.

When Jakron went to INF's clinic in Nepalgunj it was discovered that she was suffering from TB.

Jakron was treated as an inpatient in INF's clinic. She was very frightened and she and her husband both thought that she was going to die. She wondered what would happen to their daughter and son if she did die.

From NZ to Nepal

Ian Bissett, Chairman of INF New Zealand, writes about his experiences in INF's recent general surgical camp in Nepal's Bajura District:

It was a privilege to be able to travel from New Zealand to Nepal and work with INF's medical camps programme in the country's Far Western Region.

It took journeys of seven, eleven and three hours on consecutive days by Land Rover to reach the place from which we flew by helicopter for 35 minutes to reach the health post where the camp was carried out.

Trek in Nepal!

INF Australia is organising a trek in Nepal's spectacular Annapurna mountain range from 1 to 16 April 2010.

The trek will be led by INF Australia's new Development Director Phil Morris, who worked with INF in Nepal until 2008.

Trekkers will also have the opportunity to see some of INF's health and development work in Pokhara - it is hoped that each member of the trekking group will raise at least AUD$600 for INF.

INF at Urbana

INF will be represented at this year's Urbana mission conference, one of the largest events of its type in the world.

The INF North America Executive Director Mark Kiser and his sons Adam and Caleb will together be manning an INF booth at the conference, which gets under way today and continues until Thursday 31 December.

Medical camps treat 3,099

Three 'back-to-back' INF medical camps in Nepal's Bajura District have provided treatment for 3,099 people.

The three camps finished last week, all were carried out at the health post in Tante. The first camp was for ear patients, treating 1,058 people, performing 150 operations, carrying out 390 hearing tests and providing 121 hearing aids.

The second camp, for gynæcology patients, treated 955 women and carried out 90 operations.
