A minority of Nepali people will tomorrow celebrate the arrival of the Western New Year 2008. According to the astrological Hindu calendar in use in Nepal the year is 2064, and 2065 is not due to arrive until 13 April. Most people in Nepal are hoping that the country will be more peaceful in 2008, and that it will be possible for democratic elections to take place soon. The Maoist ‘People’s War’ which claimed 13,000 lives has been followed by violence between ethnic groups, particularly in Nepal’s southern Terai plains.
