Diarrhoea outbreak
25 Jul 09
A six-member INF response team yesterday finished a fifteen-day deployment in western Nepal, assisting with an outbreak of diarrhoea which has killed 128 people in the remote Jajarkot and Rukum Districts.
The outbreak has been attributed to a lack of clean drinking water, poor sanitation and low standards of hygiene.
There have been 103 diarrhoea-related deaths in Jajarkot and 25 in Rukum.
The INF team was based in Bhur and Karkigaun and administered treatment to many patients. Government agencies have mounted a co-ordinated response to the outbreak and public awareness campaigns on sanitation and hygiene are under way.
