A team from INF's Surkhet District programme has been involved in flood relief work in nearby Juprakhola.

Monsoon rains resulted in flood damage to riverbank housing occupied by a community of 'untouchable' Dalit people.

The floods carried away property, food, cooking materials, beds and livestock.

Twenty-six of the community's 100 houses were rendered uninhabitable, leaving 118 people homeless and without food.

Working with the Red Cross and local government agencies, INF helped to supply 520 kilos of rice together with lentils, salt, oil and cash to families affected by the floods.

'Local people have started to rebuild their homes and lives, but the task ahead is daunting,' says INF's Alan Barker. 'The help given is a starting point and a follow-up visit is planned.'

INF's Surkhet District programme has also been involved in relief work in the remote Jajarkot District, treating 1,000 patients over 18 days in an outbreak of cholera and diarrhoea.

The team also ran a health education programme in Jajarkot to raise awareness of the importance of using clean boiled water and properly cooked food.
