One of the most common injuries caused by childbirth in developing countries is a fistula, a hole in the bladder which leaks urine. Women affected smell of urine and are often socially stigmatised as a result. For the last three years INF has organised an annual medical camp to help women with a fistula. At this year's five-week camp in Surkhet, almost 70 women from 21 districts were assisted, and 54 had life-changing fistula operations. Basanti's husband left her after she had a stillborn child two years ago and suffered a fistula. A nephew of her mother-in-law accompanied Basanti to the INF camp in Surkhet and was so excited by it that he postponed his own wedding so he could remain with Basanti and take her home well again. INF is planning another fistula camp in early 2012.
