Bishnu Prasad Bhattarai is an INF leprosy client from a remote village in Nepal's Jajarkot District. He is married and he and his wife have three sons and two daughters. The family makes a living from farming, and they keep buffaloes, cows and goats.
'I went to a lot of places to try and get treatment, and went to see a witch doctor,' says Bishnu. 'It did no good, and things got worse.' Eventually he told his brother about his ill health. His brother suspected Bishnu might be affected by leprosy and so he took him to INF's leprosy clinic in Surkhet District for treatment. When he arrived at the INF clinic he had wounds and cracks on his legs and hands, and he had lost sensation in his limbs. After he was diagnosed as having leprosy, he began treatment as an inpatient with special medication. 'Sensation in his legs was recovered completely,' says INF nurse Puspa Neupane. 'However, he only recovered about 90% sensation in his hands. INF gave him two weeks' self-care training, and he has now returned home with the medicine he needs. We have written a letter to the health post near his home to make sure he can get any further medicine he needs from there.'
