Megan and Pabitra

Pabitra was caught in a landslide and buried by rocks. Tragically her eight-month-old son died in the accident. She received treatment in India where rods were fitted in her spine and broken leg bones. She then went to INF's Surkhet District programme for rehabilitation. 'When Pabitra came to us she was very fragile mentally and physically,' says INF occupational therapist Megan Barker. 'We had to be very gentle and take time to gain her confidence before we could get her engaged in active rehabilitation. However, now we are really pushing her. Pabitra comes from Jajarkot District, which is remote and hilly. Now that she can walk with a stick we need to get her ready for the sort of terrain she will face at home. At first she said she couldn't do it, but we have gradually gone further on hilly walks till she can now go downhill and uphill with someone alongside her for confidence. She is very happy. When I walked with her recently I apologised for being so cruel and making her do things that are so difficult. In Nepali I called myself a 'trouble-giving' person but she replied: 'No, here it is us patients who give the trouble, you are a love-giving person'.'
