Weighing just 5 kilos, 2-year-old Ramila Nepali was near to death when she arrived at INF's Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre in Jumla District.
Ramila's mother had carried her over the hills for two days so that they could reach the district centre. After Ramila had become ill, her mother had made many visits to the local traditional healer in the hope of finding a cure. When there was no improvement in Ramila's health, her mother lost faith in the healer's rituals and listened to the advice of a community health volunteer, who told her she should take Ramila to the district centre.
Ramila was too weak to talk or lift her head, and it was discovered she had pneumonia as well as being underweight. 'It was a battle to save her,' says INF Health Adviser Susanne Hutter. 'After two weeks of intensive care Ramila regained her appetite and interest in the world, and gradually recovered.'
After five weeks at INF's nutrition centre, where she was cared for and fed on a diet of special 'super flour', Ramila gained 2 kilos and blossomed into her cheerful and beautiful self.
Ramila still needs to gain another 3 kilos, and INF staff in Jumla will follow her up with regular home visits and set up a support system for Ramila's mother.
