Patients recovering in Surkhet

A three-week INF gynæcology camp is due to end in Nepal's Surkhet District today. The camp has provided life-changing surgery and treatment for women suffering from obsetric fistula, a hole between the bladder and vagina [usually caused by untreated injury in childbirth] which leads to urine leaking from the vagina. Women suffering from obstetric fistula smell of urine and many are socially ostracised and even divorced by their husbands as a result. After surgery in the operating theatre at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Surkhet, INF doctors and nurses checked daily to see that patients' urine was flowing freely from a temporary catheter until their fistula eventually healed. A large marquee tent formerly used for INF conferences in Pokhara was
utilised to accommodate recovering patients on 50 folding beds. The INF team included INF gynæcologist Dr Shirley Heywood, INF husband and wife doctors Michael and Debbie Langford [who were responsible for anæsthesia], INF nurse Sandra Chinnery [who is herself expecting a baby later this year] and visiting urologist Dr Mike Bishop. Please contact your nearest INF office if you would like to provide financial support for INF medical relief camps.
