Yesterday was the 24th annual World AIDS Day, marked around the world to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS issues. According to a recent report from the United Nations World Health Organisation, Nepal is now one of the five main countries in the Asia region which are affected by HIV/AIDS, together with Myanmar, India, Indonesia and Thailand. INF 'mainstreams' HIV/AIDS work in its six health and development programmes in Nepal's Banke, Dang, Jumla, Kaski, Mugu and Surkhet Districts. In Pokhara, Nepal's second-largest city, an INF HIV/AIDS unit provides support to the government's Western Regional Hospital. In Baglung District, INF's 'Paluwa' ['New Life'] HIV/AIDS programme provides assistance to government health services. In Nepalgunj, a strategic urban location near Nepal's border with India, INF is also active in HIV/AIDS work among drug users and female sex workers.
