A memorial service was held in Kathmandu yesterday for Shaha Gurung, the outstanding Nepali Christian leader who worked for INF and latterly the United Mission to Nepal [UMN] for more than thirty years. Shaha passed away a month ago on 16 May at the age of just 51. The service was held in the garden of the UMN office. After Bible readings and prayers by Shaha's friend Jiwan Gurung, the pastor of Pratapi church in Ghorahi, there were tributes from: Deependra Gautam of INF Nepal and Ramghat church in Pokhara; Prem Maharjan of UMN; Thir KC of the Micah Network; Buddhi Thapa of Sagoal [formerly INF's Community Development Training Programme]; Bal Krishna Sharma of the Nepal Christian Society; Shaha's friend Simon Khaling; and INF Worldwide Acting Director Seeta Gurung. Tributes to Shaha were also read out from people around the world who were unable to be present: Shaha's brother-in-law Prem Gurung in the UK; former UMN Director Jennie Collins; Steve Collins of Tearfund UK; Peter Fitzgerald of TEAR Australia; and UMN Chairman Sandy Sneddon of the Church of Scotland. There was also a visual presentation about Shaha's life and work. Shaha's wife Samjhana responded on behalf of their family, before a closing prayer by Pastor Robert Karthak of Kathmandu's Gyaneshwar church. After the service a tree was planted in the UMN garden by family members in Shaha's memory, together with a commemorative plaque. In his concluding remarks, UMN Director Mark Galpin urged all present to build on Shaha's achievements in encouraging Nepali churches to proclaim and demonstrate the Good News of Jesus.

'Well done, good and faithful servant.' Matthew 25:21
