Respond to Australia’s cuts to aid to Nepal and retreat from the Green Climate Fund

The Federal Budget has just been handed down and Australians will elect our next government on 18 May.

This is an important and urgent opportunity for Australian Christians to call on our political leaders – from every side of politics – to remember the poor in our nation and in our region if they are elected to lead the nation on 18 May.

In the most recent budget, Australia’s aid to poor nations has fallen to its lowest ever level – just 21 cents in every $100 of our national income. Aid to Nepal – one of the world’s poorest countries – is projected to be cut by 26%. Further, Australia will no longer contribute any funds to global efforts to help poor countries transition to cleaner forms of energy and respond to climate change through the Green Climate Fund.

INF Australia is calling for visionary leadership in order to restore Australia’s leadership in global efforts to reduce poverty and respond to climate change.

Please add your name to our letters to Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, and to Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten (both Christians), calling on them to “remember the poor” in our nation and our region if they are elected to lead Australia after the next election.

I write on the eve of the Federal election to ask, should you be elected to lead the nation as Prime Minister, that you and the government you lead remember the poor in our nation and in our region.
As so many have said before, I believe that the measure of a nation can be found in how it cares for its poorest and most vulnerable members. I further believe that the measure of a truly wealthy nation, such as Australia, is found in how we stand with and support our poorer neighbours as they work to overcome poverty and build resilience in the face of ever-increasing impacts of climate change.
As a matter of urgency, I call on you to restore Australia’s aid program – which has now fallen to its lowest ever level, relative to our nation’s wealth. I particularly plead for you to restore aid to Nepal, one of the world’s poorest nations, which is projected to have aid from Australia cut by 26% in the most recent budget.
I also ask you to restore funding to the Green Climate Fund, in order to support countries to transition rapidly to cleaner forms of energy and to respond to the impacts of climate change.
As a fellow Christian, I know that you take seriously the example and teaching of Christ. Restoring Australian leadership in global efforts to reduce poverty and respond to climate change is the right thing to do. In a world where all nations face interconnected challenges and burdens – health crises, forced migration, increasingly disrupted weather and natural disasters – I believe it is also necessary.
