Today is International Day for Disaster Reduction [IDDR].

IDDR raises awareness about the terrible consequences of man-made and natural disasters, and encourages citizens and governments to build more disaster resilient communities and nations.

In a country like Nepal, where devastating natural disasters come in the form of floods, landslides and earthquakes, IDDR is a welcome reminder for families, communities and the government to be better prepared.

INF is playing its part in building disaster resilience through its newly-formed Disaster Response and Resilience Department [DRRD]. The DRRD does this by focusing its work into three main areas; Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Management and Disaster Resilience.

In addition to this, the DRRD also provides relief to families and communities affected by natural disasters. Since its formation in late 2015, the DRRD has already responded to communities affected by the 2015 earthquake and major fires in Dang and Kapilvastu Districts of  west Nepal.

Today, on IDDR, we remember the many thousands of people affected yearly from disasters in Nepal and celebrate the work of the government and many organisations like INF that help in disaster work.
