Imagine living a life alone for six decades.

In February 2016, a national newspaper published Sitali’s story – “Living in the Jungle for 60 Years.” This was when INF first heard her story and reached out to help.

Sitali contracted leprosy when she was about 12. Despite taking medication from a local health post, Sitali was marginalised and continued to live alone, in a makeshift shelter, with only a dog and a few chickens.

When a fire engulfed the jungle where she lived, Sitali lost all her fingers and toes. Following this she could only crawl.

While some local people were kind to her and donated food and clothes, Sitali was often also teased and called names. She continued to be isolated, living in the jungle with her pets for many years to come.

After the newspaper article was published INF reacted immediately, and with journalists and local leaders, was able to reach Sitali’s shelter within a week.

Sitali was first assessed at INF Surkhet, then referred to Kathmandu for more specialist care before returning to INF Surkhet to complete her rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, INF also organised the building of a house for Sitali.

After three and a half months of rehabilitation, Sitali was able to walk with the aid of special shoes that provide comfort and protection to her feet from wounds. She was ready to head back to her home community, and to her new house. To her great surprise, the whole village gathered to welcome her as she returned, sprinkling flowers and colours on her as local instruments were played. And she could finally be at ease when she was reunited with her beloved dog and chickens!

“I thought I was alone in this world,” Sitali said. “I have lived in misery for six decades but now the misery is gone. Thanks to INF, I now have my own house which I had never hoped for. I cannot tell how happy I am.”

After over 60 years of living in the jungle, Sitali is still getting used to living inside two rooms and a bathroom.

“I am grateful and overjoyed for the new life I have received with the support from INF and other groups and individuals.”
