Today [18 Dec] is International Migrants Day which is marked around the world each year to recognize the efforts, contributions and rights of migrants worldwide.

High unemployment sees thousands of Nepalis forced to migrate each year in search of work. There are an estimated 3,000,000 Nepalis working in the Gulf States and South East Asia [especially in Malaysia]. There are even more working in India. While bringing additional wealth to many, migration puts strains on family relationships, and many migrants find themselves the victims of exploitation.

INF’s Diaspora initiative aims to reduce the vulnerability of migrants to exploitation, provide practical support in their places of work, and provide effective advocacy when needed.

The migration experience and needs of those going to India and those going beyond vary so INF responds in two ways: India Migrant Initiative [IMI] and Migrant Link Initiative [MLI]. IMI partners with ethnic Nepali churches in Northern India to support vulnerable Nepali migrants through community health and development. MLI partners with the Nepalese Migrant Unity Network [NeMUN] to promote safer migration and to provide advocacy and practical help for migrants who experience difficulty while working in the Gulf or Malaysia.

Today, NeMUN participated in an event organized by the Foreign Employment and Promotion Board to celebrate the International Migration Day in Kathmandu valley.
